If you've ever gone through the process of hiring new staff, you might have wondered: how long is a pre-employment medical valid for? It’s a common question, especially in industries where safety and compliance are top priorities.
The short answer? It depends, on your industry, the role in question, and any relevant workplace health and safety legislation.
Let’s take a closer look.
Is There a Standard Validity Period for Pre-Employment Medicals?
There is currently no fixed, universal expiry period for pre-employment medicals under Australian law.
However, many employers treat the results as valid for six to twelve months, depending on:
- The physical demands of the job
- The working environment (e.g. exposure to hazardous substances like asbestos or silica)
- Whether the medical was for a specific role
- Company policy or contractual requirements
For instance, someone applying for a desk-based administrative role may not require frequent reassessments, while workers in high-risk industries, like mining or transport, may need updated medicals more often to meet regulatory obligations.
What Does Workplace Legislation Say?
While general pre-employment medicals aren't directly mandated under one single piece of legislation, they are often guided by obligations in the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2011 and associated regulations.
Employers have a duty to ensure workers are fit to perform their roles safely. Under Section 274 of the WHS Act, employers may be required to conduct health monitoring for roles with exposure to hazardous substances or risks such as:
- Asbestos
- Silica
- Noise exposure
- Chemicals such as isocyanates and lead
In these cases, regular follow-up medicals, not just pre-employment checks, are often essential for compliance.
For specific industries, there are defined intervals. For example:
- Commercial vehicle drivers typically require medicals every three years (or annually if over 50), aligned with the Assessing Fitness to Drive guidelines
- Rail safety workers undergo periodic assessments in accordance with the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers (2012).
- Coal miners in NSW must undergo periodic Order 43 assessments every three years.
So, When Should You Refresh a Pre-Employment Medical?
If you’re an employer, you might consider requesting a fresh pre-employment medical if:
- The candidate hasn’t been assessed in the last 6–12 months
- The role they’re applying for has changed significantly
- They’ve had a known injury or illness since their last medical
- There’s a legal requirement tied to their job type or industry
Ultimately, the decision comes down to risk management, and making sure your business is doing what’s reasonable and practicable to protect workers’ health and safety.
Can You Reuse an Old Medical?
It's tempting to reuse an old report…but be cautious. Medicals are usually conducted for a specific role, so they may not be valid if the job changes or if too much time has passed. Some employers also have their own internal policies that limit the reuse of assessments beyond a set timeframe.
