QLD Coal Mine Worker Health Assessments

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A QLD COAL MINE WORKER HEALTH ASSESSMENT?

All employees and contractors working on a coal mine site within Queensland are required to undergo a QLD Coal Mine Workers Health Assessment. However, depending on your role and current employment status, the requirements of your medical may be different and additional assessments may be required.

Don’t risk an inexperienced medical provider completing the wrong assessments and wasting your money – Assist Group’s medical team is nationally accredited by Queensland Government’s Department of Natural Resources and Mines to complete the QLD Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme coal worker health assessments.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A QLD COAL MINE WORKERS HEALTH ASSESSMENT?

The QLD Coal Mine Workers Health Assessment consists of 4 different sections, 3 of which will be completed during your appointment. Prior to your QLD Coal assessment, you, or your employer, will be required to complete the Section 1 form, detailing your position, specific exposure group (SEG) and mine site.

Upon assessment, you will be provided with a medical history request form where you will be asked about any previous conditions, injuries or illnesses that may impact your ability to perform your role.

During your physical assessment, the Examining Medical Officer will complete the following tests:

  • Anthropometrics (Height, weight, body mass index (BMI))
  • Vision Tests (Near, Distance and Colour)
  • Audiogram (Screening Assessment)
  • Spirometry Assessment (Lung function testing)
  • Cardiovascular examination (Heart check, blood pressure, pulse)
  • Urinalysis for diabetes and disorders of the internal organs
  • Brief musculoskeletal assessment
  • Chest x-ray – completed to ILO standard and report provided via Lungscreen Australia (two-read x-ray review process)

At the end of your examination, the Approved Medical Advisor will review your paperwork and results, including the two-read x-ray report as provided by Lungscreen Australia, before completing the Section 4 – Health Assessment Report. This will then be forwarded to your employer to prove your capacity to work in the required role.

(Note; additional Lungscreen Australia fees apply for the two-read ILO reporting process)

HOW WILL I KNOW IF I REQUIRE ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS?

Pre-Employment Coal Board Medical

Coal Mine Workers Health Assessments can be tailored depending on the requirements of your position and location of work. In our experience, the most common additions to the coal mine worker medical assessments are:

  • Instant or Laboratory based drug and alcohol assessments
  • Sub-maximal aerobic capacity assessments for Mines Rescue staff
  • Functional strength, manual handling and fitness testing

Note: QLD Coal Mine Worker Medicals can also be performed prior to gaining employment, however we can only provide a Section 4 (certificate of fitness) upon receipt of the Section 1 form detailing the company name, company contact, SEG and mine site you will be attending.

QLD Coal Mine Worker Medicals can also be performed prior to gaining employment, as an Interim Certificate can be completed at the end of your assessment. If employment is gained within 6 months of the initial assessment, your final Section 4 certificate will be released with the details of your employer attached.
